Tea Fire Benefit

As a Tea Fire Victim, I would like to organize a benefit to help everyone affected by this devastating disaster. I am just starting to gather ideas on how to do so, but if anyone has any ideas or would like to help get local businesses involved or the media involved to help I could use all the help I can get. I would also like to organize a lunch or bbq at the beach or somewhere to gather all the victims so we could share stories, hugs, smiles and cries together. I offer my shoulder to anyone who needs emotional support from someone going through the same thing. Lets all put our heads together and make something happen. Thank you.

First and foremost, a gathering of the victims is great. I say, you just pick a date, place and time in the relatively near future and advertise it. I have a friend at the Independent (I'll email you contact info) and I bet that any newspaper would run something for you if you sent them the info.

I've never put on a benefit, but have seen successful music benefits put on for victims of the La Conchita landslide and the SB Rape Crisis Center, among others. Having people approach local businesses and artists with a personal connection might be the most effective for gathering donations of goods and services to be used in a (silent) auction. If you want to do a music benefit, there are many ways you could do it. You could organize something intimate with local musicians (like Glen Phillips at Soho), or something like groups of musicians who are tied to Santa Barbara (like Jack Johnson at the Arlington or the Bowl (but it's not going to be Bowl season anytime soon), you could also get really ambitious and throw a music festival in the spring. so many of you are offering help, but my experience is - practical help is sooo needed right now!! Iknow someone who needs help with clearing their land - he is a wonderful UCSB retired professor - lost everything: Gary Brown, Gary Brown - a group to clear the land before rain come in is soooo needed.
